Objective:
Explore the medieval district of Angers through anecdotes about medieval culinary and weddings traditions. Locals and tourists alike can discover the history of this city in the Middle Ages with Aldric. In front of Adam's house on Place Sainte Croix, your guide offers an unconventional guided tour in historical outfit for a fun experience in a small group.
Program
It is September 10, 1454. It's a festive atmosphere in Angers as preparations are underway to celebrate the wedding of the 'Good King René' and Jeanne de Laval. Aldric, as an innkeeper, is responsible for the supply of ales and wine for the banquet to be held at the castle, attended by around a hundred guests. The weather is beautiful today, and Aldric takes advantage of his day off to show the group around the Cité district, where the celebrations will take place. Along the way, we pass by an apothecary's house, artisan houses, the cathedral, and the castle, allowing Aldric to discuss those who, directly or indirectly, will be involved in the wedding of the Duke of Anjou.
Get to Know Your Guide/Character:
Aldric was born in 1424 in Angers ("Angiers," as it was called at the time), where he spent his entire childhood. He is the eldest of a family of 6 children, three boys and three girls. His parents run the inn "Au claque-dents," located just across from the castle. He was 10 years old when René, already Duke of Bar and Lorraine, became Duke of Anjou. At the age of 15, his mother died after a miscarriage, following the loss of his youngest brother. In 1441, just a few days before his 17th birthday, his father, who was ill, entrusted him with the management of his tavern and inn. The following year, he met Elda, who would become his wife and the mother of his 3 children.
Aldric, due to his proximity to the castle of the Dukes of Anjou, has always been passionate about old stones, stories of knights, and castle intrigues... He loves sharing anecdotes with his clients about the life of Duke René, Saint Louis' last days on the crusade, the construction of Angers Castle, and more. But what he is most passionate about in the world, which is related to his profession, is the art of dining. He knows all about wine, liqueurs, game, sauced dishes, and more.
It is precisely because of his knowledge on the subject and the success of his inn that Duke René of Anjou called on him to select the best wines and beers from the region to be featured at his wedding banquet.
