Due to his position, Baron d’Arros will also share numerous anecdotes about the regents of this dark and lesser-known period.
Get to know your character:
Baron Bernard d’Arros is the eldest son of Jean d’Arros, the seventh barony of the Viscounty of Béarn. He was born towards the end of the 16th century. After participating in the Italian Wars from 1528 to 1544, he became a counselor to King Henri II of Navarre.
In 1568, he was appointed "Chief Conductor and Captain General of the Armies" by Jeanne d’Albret.
He organized resistance against Baron Terride, sent by King Charles IX of France, by barricading himself in the town of Navarrenx and sustaining a two-and-a-half-month siege during the summer of 1569. He continued to govern Béarn to restore order until the return of Queen Jeanne III d’Albret and her children from La Rochelle in 1571.
Confirmed in his position in 1572 by Prince Henri de Bourbon upon his departure for the Kingdom of France, he refused to execute the ordinances of King Henri de Navarre, who sought to reinstate Catholicism in Béarn, after the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre.
At his request, he was relieved of his duties in 1575 after many years of service.
