Objective:

  • Journey through Strasbourg in the 15th century, experiencing its daily life and discovering the construction site of its remarkable cathedral.
  • Gaining insight into the workings of a stonecutter's guild in the Holy Roman Empire and the role of a master builder, along with their tools.
  • Tour the city with a certified guide who is also dressed in historical outfit, immersing herself in the role of a woman from the late Middle Ages.
  • Take a journey back in time to the medieval Strasbourg during an unusual and interactive visit featuring historical objects and tools.

Program

Follow Jeanne, a Strasbourg native working for the "Oeuvre Notre-Dame." She roams the city's streets, serving the manager and the Master Builder of the cathedral to manage the daily affairs of these men in charge of constructing this Gothic masterpiece. In Strasbourg, a free city in the Holy Roman Empire, the Pfaltz, towers, and ramparts bear witness to its strength and independence. In this small republic, where the harbor, shops, and granaries display prosperity, now stands the world's tallest tower.

Get to Know Your Guide/Character:

Jeanne is the daughter of a master carpenter. When she was young, she already admired the work of the numerous artisans at the cathedral construction site. She never strayed far from it, putting herself at the service of the "Oeuvre." While she doesn't work directly at the site, she contributes in her own way to the smooth running of her master's daily routine and the entire lodge.
